Oppo F5 review
The Oppo F5 is pretty slim and compact for this screen size. Its polycarbonate case is lightweight and slightly grippy, but it’s clearly a demotion from the solid metal construction of the F3 and seems to be a necessary cost-saving approach. The unibody design remains fingerprint-free and has a smooth premium feel. The plastic construction is not as bad as you might imagine – polycarbonate supports the radio transmission and will not be damaged if dropped. The slightly elongated fingerprint scanner is fast accurate and looks great with the minimalist design.
The main highlight – the display – is FullHD and looks reasonably sharp. The contrast is excellent and the brightness is of the highest quality. On an IPS, the blacks are dark enough to provide an intense experience, coupled with the frameless setup. The F5 has an “Auto Max Mode”, which increases the brightness in direct sunlight. Overall, the display has a moderately balanced color configuration.
The Oppo F5 is equipped with the iOS-inspired ColorOS 3.2, which in addition to Android 7.1.1 nougat contains numerous proprietary adjustments. Although we prefer an Android camp-free experience, ColorOS offers a sophisticated interface and many handy features. The chipset is strong enough to handle daily basic operations easily, and gaming performance is also satisfactory. The ColorOS is well bloated, but the hardware of the Oppo F5 is able to run it smoothly without any significant obstacles.
The primary camera is good enough for a mid-range smartphone – details are sharp enough, colors are reasonably natural and noise reduction is effective. Due to the missing OIS function, some problems will occur. You need a still hand to capture motion blur-free images. Autofocus is below average and inaccurately slow. Some other problems are also present, e.g. Inaccurate metering and the inability to use fixed focus. If you are working with manual photography, the Oppo F5 has a good manual mode that can compensate for the above problems. The shutter speed can be extended up to 16 seconds, so that good, trouble-free recordings in low light are possible. The “Selfie Expert” Front Shooter is great and fits very well with the built-in AI. The AI-based background blur is really accurate and of high quality – much better than some of the dual cams.
